Preparing your house for when TSHTF

Presumably many of you have viewed the You Tube videos of

Old Friends
and Pandemic:
There are some survival ideas included in these videos such as a trip wire which shoots (probably) wasp/hornet spray at intruders eyes. Is there a web site that provides in detail just how to rig up some of these traps, trip wires or other alert mechanisms for a SHTF scenario to keep the bad guys away (or slow them down) besides having a dog?

If there is a gun show coming up in your local area, you can usually find a couple of dealers selling old military survival guides. Lots cover boobie traps and other useful info. Paying cash for a hard copy is better than a bunch of google searches in trip wires.

Re: Preparing your house for when TSHTF

I have thought that one of the most useful preps needed for the home would be thick sheets of plywood. Enough large sheets to cover all of your windows... It seemt to me that most U.S. homes are extremely vulnerable from zombie attack since theres no way to protect forced entry from the windows.

If things ever get too bad, you pull the plywood in and bolt it into a couple of stufs from the inside of the window. Of course, cut holes for viewing... or anything else you may need would seem appropriate...

THe other thought I had... a vent pipe to vent a generators exhaust gases, so you could run the generator safely from a laundry room or garage. In the example video above, I kept thinking that the generator was going to get ripped off, or they were going to get jumped from behind while trying to fuel it up in the middle of the night. Running it in a laundry room w/ exhaust pipes would also keep a lot of the noise masked, lowering the chance for an unwanted encounter..

Probably ideas others have had numerous times... but still valid.....

For windows - security laminates. For doors - steel exterior doors (not the cheap kind that can be bent in half withone kick) with steel reinforced hinges and striker plates. Or you could get a decorative steel security "screen" door.

Re: Preparing your house for when TSHTF

Thanks, the laminate is a great idea...

Already got the security door... need to upgrade locks though....

The windows are still my biggest fear..

Also - Dont forget to secure your exterior door in your garage (normally exits to back yard or side of driveway.) This is the most common entry point to a house as it is an easy entrance into a hidden area (your garage) where they can take more time breaking into the main house)

Plywood is a good idea to make windows less vulnerable, but most homes are vulnerable to axes, etc. going through most walls, even stucco. Brick is most resistant, of course, but brick homes aren't often found any more.

The key is keeping the "zombies" away from the house with warning shots, or drop shots if they persist.

The best defense is a good offense: (1) sniper in a tree overlooking your house and (2) Claymore mines (command controlled) if you can get them.

Re: Preparing your house for when TSHTF

Crooks of today are just like Zombies of tomorrow.....they will avoid harder targets and move on to easier ones, just being human nature.
A single Molotov cocktail will defeat most of the measures above....smoke/fire brings most all critters out of their nests.

So, the BEST defense is a house located back from public road access, blocked by a good gate, with fallen timber as an additional block if needed, then that located in a valley with tall mountains around it and only two roads in/out that could be block with roads/bridges removed and miles of timber fallen across the road......oh...wait....I just described where (and WHY ) I picked my location 25 years ago.

Yep.....prepackaged M18's are nice.....but home made substitutes are fairly easy to cook up....

Picture this:

With the plastic/wadding/shot removed, and the brass ( now a detonator ) inserted into a pipe of black powder with 6 one pound propane canisters duct taped around the pipe, housed in a paper mache thing that "looks" like a rock.........for informational purposes only, of course.

I always thought natural type fencing was a good idea.

You have a gate across the drive, now butt up multi-flora, blackberry, hawthorne tress, posion ivy, or whatever from the gates and ring your pastures with them. Some type of thicket and make it 20-25 feet wide. Hell make it 50 feet wide. You plant edible berry plants and you have a food source as well from the berries not to mention the wildlife that will be in them. It's more low key than chainlink topped with razor wire and takes a bit more than bolt cutters to get through it. Takes time to grow though.

QWAK,MetalMoney,If you have ever had your car repared at a small shop in winter you probably noticed a piece of "FLEX CONDUIT" put over the exhaust pipe so the mecanics did not kill them selves runing the engen inside a closed garage. They also would have had an exhaust fan and likely a GAS detector alarm. :thumb.aspx:

I have two my self one is aluminum and the other steel. The aluminum one was a piece of INSOLATED flex duct used in AC,it is easily damaged but if it is not steped on or run over will work fine and not very expencive. The 15' piece I got was SCRAP left over from an AC job so free back when I was SCROUNGING.

As for boobie traps -- BUY a case of old fassioned "RAT TRAPSW" the kind with a board and heavy duty spring. also but a large spool of 4LB monoflant fishing line! With a little CREATIVITY on your part you can have an asortment of BOOBY TRAPS that range from just the NOISE of the trap being tripted to turning on LIGHTS or even seting off a small explocive device!

Also old camera FLASH CUBES and a battery can be wired to go off when a trip wire is pulled.

Get CREATIVE  the best are the ones no one else has ever seen so no one expects them!:shine:

Re: Preparing your house for when TSHTF

One of the "need to get" items on my want list is a roll of barb wire for the back yard. When TSHTF I would string it on my existing stockade fence to make life a little less pleasant for intruders. I'd have to get some sort of "extender" to attach the barbed wire about a foot away from the fence. A double or triple strand should be effective to do the job.

It's so cheap, as well - I bought 3 rolls to keep the deer ON the lawn at my BO place - one way in, the freezer way out. Just get some REALLY heavy gloves for stringing it.

Re: Preparing your house for when TSHTF

Since you guys mention the barb wire thing.

Where I live now the small back yard has a very sturdy 6 foot wooden fence. Sort of feels like a fortress actually.

It has crossed my mind a few times that if things got bad I could glue broken glass along the top of the fence to prevent climbing.

Ouch!

I definitely concur with the location part being most important.

Plywood for windows and extra fire extinguishers are also a good idea.

How about installing metal brackets on both sides of your doors to allow barring the door with a thick piece of lumber or steel? Would prevent zombies from bashing your door down easily.

I've thought about beefing up the door frame and installing heavy bolts to hold the brackets but then putting something ornamental over the bolts until I feel the need to install the brackets. I suppose you could do the same with whatever you are planning to cover windows with.

Bigbuber,

We have a beagle that can scale our 6' block walls in our backyard. I tried a ton of things, but the best option I came up with was rabbit fence about 30" high, anchored to the block. 2 small holes drilled on the top of each connecting column and a small stainless place to sandwich the rabbit fence to the block and you have a near invisible mount. If TS ever HTF you could loop your barb or razor wire through that very easily....

At the moment there's no barb or razor, but even the site of that extended wire has to give a would-be intruder pause... "What is in their backyard that need this much extra securing?!" would you jump into a backyard with a 2' wire extension on the top of a 6' block? Because its transparent, it also doesnt get me in trouble with the zoning nazis... Dont know its there until youre about 4-5 ft away...

I have a few houses, and one has a wall backing on to an alleyway. On the top it has broken bottles embedded neck-down into a layer of cement to deter climbers. It's the same way I bought it, so the surveyor declared it a "decorative feature". Not bulletproof, but a way of making them move on to the next house rather than mine!
